What does catnip do to cats?

Catnip comes from a natural plant called Nepeta cataria. When cats smell it, many feel playful, excited, or extra affectionate. You might see rolling, rubbing, zoomies, or happy chaos.

The effects usually last 5–15 minutes, then wear off on their own.

Not all cats react—sensitivity is genetic—and kittens under 6 months often don’t respond yet. Catnip is non-addictive and safe for cats in normal amounts.
